Behind the set

This art song set reimagines the monophonic plainchant compositions of Hildegard von Bingen (1098-1179), pioneering medieval composer and mystic. By fusing Hildegard's sacred music with contemporary harmonization and techniques, this project bridges the historical gap between medieval plainchant and the present, honoring Hildegard's legacy while reinvigorating them in a creatively fresh form.

The selected chants,

"O quam mirabilis est" and

"O cruor sanguinis," capture the essence of Hildegard's modal melodies while enhancing the original compositions through extended piano techniques, original notation, improvisation, kinesthetic visuals, and timbral effects.
